Five Songs of Love and Yearning for mezzo-soprano and piano (1986)
composed by Walter Arlen on texts by St. John of the Cross (translation by Howard Myers)
The Five Songs of Love and Yearning are of great personal importance to Walter Arlen. Inspired by the translation of the poems from Spanish by Howard Myers, to whom the Five Songs are also dedicated, he wrote them in just a few days after a long break from composing. They rekindled his passion for composing.
