In 1945 Franz Waxman asked his friend Jascha Heifetz if he would be interested in playing on the soundtrack of the Warner Bros. motion picture Humoresque (with John Garfield as a struggling violinist, Oscar Levant as his friend and pianist, and Joan Crawford as Garfield’s ill-fated lover). Although Heifetz and Warner Bros. could not work out the contractual differences, the collaboration between Waxman and Heifetz was born. The Tristan and Isolde: Love Music is one of the pieces that stem from this period and is based on the love duet in Act II of the Wagner Opera. Heifetz played the piece many times on tour; unfortunately he never recorded it.
The first recording was by Mark Kaplan and Christina Ortiz on the all-Waxman Goyana release from Koch International Classics.
